Sapphire - Xhosa Maiden Faerie

Small Watercolour Painting
Sapphire - Xhosa Maiden Faerie

“I wanted a contrast for her warm brown skin so I used edgy cerulean, indigo and cobalt blue. The orange in the yellow flower is repeated on top of her wing. I added cultural beading to her wrist and ankle. As a faerie she is relatively large, although light enough to balance on a small flower.”

Sapphire: Xhosa Maiden Faerie

Sapphire is an ethnic faerie. She is delicate and extremely feminine. Her smooth skin glows with dark amber tones and the tribal ornamentation round her wrists and ankles are specific to the rural Xhosa culture. Her hair is braided in shiny urban chic. Shimmering Sapphire butterfly wings reflect the beautiful azure African wildflower she diligently tends.

She alights gracefully, to rest awhile and to contemplate the infinite floral display carpeting the surrounding hills. As a fairy she is shyly elusive and typically invisible to mortals; like the Sapphire butterfly, she will delicately quiver her wings, rising with elegant poise to flutter to a flower further up the shallow incline.
