Iselyn - Ice-crystal Sprite

Small Watercolour Painting
Iselyn - Ice-crystal Sprite

“This is a study in cold-blue and pink. The cold shades of the background contrast with the warm pinks of the sprite’s form. I wanted the snow and ice crystals to look edgy and brittle against the smooth roundedness of her body.

The painting portrays emergence. I used the uniformity of colour to keep the background from becoming overwhelming as she emerges from its folds.”

Iselyn - Ice-crystal Sprite

Iselyn is a slight, delicate, subtle and insubstantial being. She is fragile and wraithlike, and has few dealings with mortals. As a tiny nature fairy she is associated with weather and the seasons, and is responsible for ushering in the cold, frost and snow.

Her frozen winter wings glisten and the icicles in her hair sparkle in the refracted radiance of the surrounding ice crystals.

Although she is in the midst of icy winter, she herself does not experience discomfort, and the icicles transform into water to gently drop from her warm body.
